Toughened glass, also known as tempered glass, is a type of safety glass that has increased strength and will usually shatter into small, square pieces when broken. It is used when strength, thermal resistance, and safety are important considerations.
The process to create toughened glass involves heating it to a high temperature and then rapidly cooling it. This process, known as tempering, puts the outer surfaces of the glass into compression and the interior into tension. This means that the outer layers need to be penetrated before the glass can break, making it much stronger than regular glass.
If toughened glass does break, it will crumble into small granular chunks instead of splintering into jagged shards like regular glass. This characteristic makes it less likely to cause severe injury.
Toughened glass is used in a variety of demanding applications, including passenger vehicle windows, shower doors, architectural glass doors and tables, refrigerator trays, mobile screen protectors, as a component of bulletproof glass, and various types of plates and cookware.
